Dear Diary 3/27/2014

Dear Diary,

Looking for ducks
Just stopping for a moment to catch my breath and catch you up on what I've been doing lately I can't believe that I've been in my new home now for over two whole months! Feels like a lifetime to me.

Everyday Mommy and Papa take me on long walks through the fields and around the lake across from the road from us. I love looking for birds and squirrels and being able to run around off leash. I'm very careful to stay away from the road and listen when Mommy or Papa calls me.

I spied a couple of Mallard ducks and carefully snuck up on them.

I saw two Mallard duck near the shore and tried to sneak up on them
Today, we spent about a trillion hours running around the lake. I spied a couple of Mallard ducks near the shore and very quietly snuck up on them. I hide behind a fallen tree, but they saw me and quickly swam away.

Last week, Mommy took my to my new Vet. She said it was something called a "Meet and Greet." I really like him and I tried very hard to behave. The stories of my past behaviors at the vet followed me, so I was afraid that if I did something wrong, my new family might send me back. Not to fear, Dr. Peter helped me feel at ease and even gave me some yummy treats each time I did what he asked me to. Oh Boy, oh boy oh boy! Were those treats good!

Dr. Peter told me that I have lost 4.5 lbs and that I am more than halfway to my ideal weight. Looks like my diet is working and all the exercise is doing some good. I hope I lose the rest of my weight soon though, if given a choice, I'd much rather spend my days sleeping on my bed next to Mommy and her computer. She needs me to help keep her on task.

I have more good news. I don't have to have the benign melanoma on my eyelid removed right away. Dr. Peter said that it wasn't causing my runny eyes. It is instead my lower eyelids slightly rolling in toward my peepers. The bad news is that he also said that I need to get my teeth cleaned really bad. I might even lose a couple teeth. Ugh! Does it hurt when they pull your teeth?

I'm starting to feel really at home here now. I still have times when I feel really sad and don't want to anything at all, but they are getting fewer and fewer. I no longer carry my old collar around everywhere I go. I now carry my leash. It is a lot more fun to drag it around and tell everyone that I want to go for a walk than carrying an old boring collar around.

See how swelt I'm getting?
Mommy and Papa are really working with me on my commands. I am heeling better now, and I finally mastered that rolling over thing. Mommy got real excited about that, so I do it all the time now. She also discovered that I really do like to fetch - well sort of like to, depending on my mood. What I like best of all though is furry squeaky toys. It is so much fun to get the squeakers out. We found a Kong ball that squeaked on the lake shore and took it home. I had that squeaker out in less than five minutes. Boy, am I getting good! Mommy also bought me "Foxy" another Kong toy. I'm really working on that one too, but the squeaker is proving to be a lot harder. It just won't come out. Give me time though and I'll get it.

This is the best home evar!

Dear Diary,

I had fun today running in the snow
Today I had an adventure! No, we didn't go somewhere in the truck, we stayed home, but so many fun things to do.

After breakfast, Mommy noticed a great big dog walking through our back yard. She said it was a coyote, that it was dangerous, and that I couldn't go outside while it was around. It walked over to one of our trees and laid down for a nice morning nap in the sun. I wanted to go outside so bad, so finally Papa told me to go get my leash. Oh boy, oh, boy, oh boy! We went outside to tend the chickens, and guess what? Another squirrel came out of the hen house! This time I came soooo close to catching it! After that, we walked around a bit until Papa said we had to come back in. Mommy was still standing at the window watching the coyote. Boy, was she huge! I weigh almost 70 lbs and she made me look like a wiener dog!

After a few hours, the coyote finally got up and headed on over to the lake, so Mommy said we could take our walk now. It was the warmest day in a long time. Mommy didn't even wear a coat. We went out into the south field and I got to run in the snow. Papa came outside too and was knocking ice-cycles off the roof, so Mommy said I had to stay out in the field with her until it was safe. The pony and donkey were out in their pasture so we went over to say hello, then Tiki, a big, scaredy-cat of a German Shepard came out to greet us as well. After that, we went to our other neighbor's house and I met their two dogs, Bobo, an aging German Short hair, and Bonehead, a Boxer. Both were friendly too. I'm so glad I have such good neighbors.

Mommy said that the coyote was pregnant and
had something called "Mange."
While walking and running around the field, I found the coyote's and a fox's tracks. Mommy told me to "use my nose" and so off we went following their trails. We came to the ditch and I saw the fox just on the other side of it. She stared at us for a while. I wanted to go after her, but Mommy said "NO!" and I am learning that when Mommy says "NO" she means it. We also found where the coyote took her nap and followed her tracks to the road. Mommy said that the coyote had something called mange and that I didn't want to get it. After that, I flushed a rabbit and I gave chase for a while, but it went under the neighbor's fence, so I lost it. Squirrels are a lot more fun to chase.

I was pretty tired after all that running and chasing, so I took a nap with Pudgie most of the afternoon. We laid in the sun in the dining room and snoozed the afternoon away.

After supper, I decided that there was dog out in the yard that looked just like me! Mommy kept telling me that it was my reflection in the window glass, but I don't believe her. That dog sure wanted to play! We danced with each other through the whole evening, I on one side of the window and she on the other. What fun! Best day evar!

Dear Diary,

Pudgie and I taking in a little sun
Today is my 10th day with my new family and I am growing more and more comfortable here. My humans play with me a lot and Pudgie and I are becoming real friends.

It's been really cold so I can't go out for long. Papa says that he is going to buy me a coat and snow booties if this weather keeps up much longer.

Today the sun came out and Pudgie and I took a nap near the sun room window.  Mommy was trying to get our picture, but I woke up just before she was able to get a shot.  There is a squirrel that keeps teasing both Pudgie and me. He climbs up onto the window ledge and then chatters away at us. He knows that we can't get to him and he is so smug. Nananana! One of these days he is going to slip up and I am going to be waiting!

I've been practicing catching squirrels by playing with the squirrel  toy that Mommy bought for me. I finally "killed" it today by ripping it open and pulling out the squeaker. Oh boy, oh boy, oh, boy, how I love those squeakers!

I have a lot of fun playing in the house. It can get me into trouble though. I chase the cats and they get all upset, then either Mom or Papa comes running with a spray bottle. Nasty smelling stuff too. Ruins my fun real fast! Party poopers!

The Historic Highlandlake Church
that Mommy helps to take care of.
Yesterday, Mommy and I took a short walk up to the historic Highlandlake church. She said that someone was coming to see the building who wanted to have a wedding in it next fall
. Debbie was real nice and even liked me jumping on her - until I knocked her phone out of her hand. She said only the case was cracked so that was a relief, I really didn't mean to do that, I just got so excited over someone loving on me.

See how well I can play "dead?" Not even my tail is wagging.
Several times a day, either Mommy or Papa plays with me and try to teach me some new tricks. I have fun showing them what I already know how to do, and then they get so excited! I'm really having a hard time learning to roll over though. Just when I think I've got it, I forget how! I keep confusing the command to "roll over" with "play dead." I do the latter really well, and besides it doesn't take as much effort to do. I just lay down and pretend to be dead until someone tells me I can get up. Rolling over, on the other paw, means I have to work at getting my legs to get from one side to the other, or something like that. That is hard work. Much easier to just lay down on my side.

I'm really starting to make myself at home. In the photo on the left, you can see me in my favorite TV watching chair. It's really comfy and I have a good view of everything going on around me. This is the best life evar!

Dear Diary,

Mommy is spending most of the day in bed today. She says that she has something called a "migraine." Don't know what that is, but it was probably caused by eating too much ham last night and not sharing! I decided to forgive her for her trespasses and curled up on the bed close beside her. I want her to know that even if she is being selfish about the ham, I still love her.

Dear Diary,

This morning I came so close to catching one of those conniving squirrels! We were tending the chickens and when Papa opened the door to the hen house one ran out and almost hit me in the chest! Talk about a surprise! Only took me a second to get over my startle, after all I am a Vizsla. I gave chase and almost caught him, but at the last minute he escaped under the fence. Dang it all! So close! Tomorrow, if one runs out of the hen house, I am going to be prepared. No second chances for thieving squirrels on my watch.

In the afternoon, Mommy taught me a new trick - how to roll over. At first I didn't understand what she wanted me to do. I would just lay down on my side. Once I got the idea though, I had sooooo muccccchhhhh fun! Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks! My favorite trick evar!

My friend Pudgie
After I had my supper, Mommy started fixing their supper. She made something called, "Split Pea Soup." Smelled good, but she told me I couldn't have any. Then, she went and started cutting up some pieces of ham. Ham! My favorite food of all time! I politely asked her for some and, and, and, she said no! What is up with that? I was a good dog today, I even rolled over for her! I watched her put all that yummy ham into the soup. I asked again, and again she still said no! This was getting to be too much! I started whining, and when that didn't budge her, I started going as close as I could to the pan on the stove, looked longingly at it, and barked. Didn't work. Dang her anyway, doesn't she understand what I am trying to tell her? Best treat evar and she won't allow me to have any? I was forced to watch them eat and then watched the leftovers go into the fridge instead of my tummy. I thought that maybe I wasn't being that clear about what I wanted. Humans after all expect us to learn their language, but they seem pitifully slow in learning Vizsla. For the rest of the evening I tried everything I could think of to make them understand that ham was on my menu. Nothing worked, not even grabbing Mommy's shirt and leading her to the fridge. I'm going to sign off now cause it is not one of my best days evar! :-(

Mom's friend and fellow CWVRG member with
"Pink." She is a way too cute of a Vizsla puppy
for her own good.
Dear Diary,

Today was Groundhog Day and to celebrate, I went on an adventure! Right after lunch we all packed into the car and went to someplace called McGukins in Boulder. I had never been there before, but they allow pet parents to bring their fur kids into the store! I didn't have to stay in the truck like I do when we go most places! Yippers! Once in the store we ran into a friend of Mom's and guess what? Shawna had two of the cutest, six week-old Vizsla puppies with her! Mommy took a picture of her holding "Pink." Everyone was crowding around the babies wanting to hold them and love on them. For a while there, I was afraid I was going to be ignored. Well, being royalty and such, I just can't allow that to happen, so I spoke right up and said, "Welp, welp! Over here folks!." People turned around and yes, they started paying attention to me. I've heard it said that babies always steal the show, but these pups didn't have a real chance, not with this Hungarian Princess around!
Here I am showing off my stuff to
fellow visitors in McGukins.

After spending time charming everyone in the store, we headed back home to watch the Super Bowl. Along the way, we stopped at another store and Mommy bought me the cutest stuffed squirrel I've ever seen! Now I can practice my squirrel catching skills. Give me time, those outside squirrels won't have a chance! She also bought me a Hungarian Princess name tag to decorate my collar. All pink, with sparkles and a crown on it. Yummy! On the back is written my name, "Tori Tornado," and my phone number. Now, everyone who meets me will know that I am royalty and should be treated as such.

After we got back home we all settled down to watch the Super Bowl. Our team didn't win so we turned the station and watched something called the, "Puppy Bowl" on Animal Planet. Boy, oh, boy, oh boy! That show was waaaay mooore fun than the other one. Mommy popped some popcorn and every once in a while when Papa didn't think Mommy was looking, he tossed me a piece. Best treat ever! When it was finally time to curl up in bed, Papa didn't even try to tell me to sleep in my own bed. He just held up the covers and said, "Hop in." Best day ever!
